The Map That Screamed

While removing another imaginary kingdom from Veyr’s living map, Ilyra hears thousands of voices crying out beneath her knife.

The city of Veyr stood around an ancient harbour, and its map was alive in the way old things are alive: not with breath, but with refusal.

The map had been laid across the Hall of Measures for four hundred years, stitched from whale-skin and the thin silver membranes of things nobody now remembered naming. Coastlines shifted when the tide turned. Mountain ranges lowered themselves during storms. Every morning, the cartographers removed one impossible kingdom from its surface before the citizens could begin believing in it.

Ilyra Venn was good at removal. Her knife had a narrow black blade and a handle polished smooth by generations of careful hands. She was cutting away the Kingdom of Or, which had appeared overnight beyond the western harbour, when the map screamed.

Not one voice. Thousands.

They cried from beneath the skin of the map: names, prayers, directions, the sound of bells underwater. Ilyra froze with the knife halfway through a painted inlet.

Then a voice, very close to her ear, whispered: Do not cut the way home.
