The Harbour Facing Nothing
The harbour at Veyr’s western edge has always faced the sea. This morning, it faces a black absence where the horizon should be.
By dawn, the voices had stopped, but the map had not become quiet.
It clicked and tightened beneath its brass pins, as if some enormous creature were trying to turn over in sleep. Ilyra left the Hall of Measures with the forbidden strip of Or folded inside her coat and went west, toward the harbour.
Veyr’s harbour had always faced the sea. Fishermen could navigate it blind by the smell of salt and engine smoke; children learned the names of its cranes before they learned the names of the saints. But that morning the water ended thirty paces beyond the seawall.
Beyond it was not fog. Fog had texture. This was a black absence, perfectly vertical, swallowing the horizon without reflecting the sun.
A mooring bell rang from inside it.
The painted harbour on the strip of map was pointing not west, but down. At her feet, between two wet stones, someone had scratched a message into the quay: VEY R IS NOT THE FIRST.
