The City Chooses Its Tide
The black ship did not rise cleanly; it climbed through Veyr’s foundations in a groan of tearing saltwood, and the harbour water poured uphill around its ribs as if the city had remembered an older tide. Ilyra stood at the seawall with the moonbone compass warm in her palm, watching the older version of herself brace one scarred hand against the hull while Sere, pale in the lanternlight, pointed at the map of the city as it shivered and redrew a street that had never existed. The black door at the harbour mouth was no longer a door but a wound of bright, seawater-dark light, and from inside it came the sound of gulls over an open sea. “Choose,” the older Ilyra said, not looking back. Then the compass jerked hard toward the rising keel, and every whale-skin membrane in the Hall of Measures snapped east, as if Veyr itself had decided which world it would keep.
