When the First World Returned
The first world returns through the black door, carrying a familiar face and a warning that Veyr is already beginning to vanish.
The door appeared at the western harbour just before sunrise.
It stood upright on the water where the horizon had been, made of black wood and silver hinges. No wall surrounded it. Beyond the frame was a shore under a violet sky, and beyond that shore a city burning with patient blue fire.
Veyr gathered along the seawall. Ilyra carried the moonbone compass. Sere carried nothing. Behind them, the living map had been brought from the Hall of Measures by twelve frightened cartographers. Its surface was almost entirely blank.
The door opened.
A woman stepped through wearing Ilyra’s face. She was older, scarred across the mouth and dressed in the uniform of a world that had learned to travel through its own ruins.
“You have less time than we did,” she said.
“Who are you?” Ilyra asked.
The woman touched the black door. “The version of you that cut the way home.”
Behind her, something vast moved across the violet sky. Beneath Veyr, the buried ship began to rise.
